University campaign is stepped up by MP
THE campaign to build a Cornish University campus at Penzance was stepped up by St Ives MP, Andrew George on Friday when he presented a petition to Parliament.
Mr George has also questioned the Education Secretary, David Blunkett about the £30 million project which has the support of more than 3,000 local people.
The MP said: "Since launching the petition a couple of months ago it has received thousands of signatures.
"The initiative has massive support locally - it is exactly what Cornwall needs. Not only would it help Cornish students who want improved opportunities but it would bring much needed jobs and new investment into this particularly deprived area.
"With the imposition of tuition fees from the new Labour Government, many students will choose to study close to home. But this is not so easily available in Cornwall."
Mr George added that he was determined to get a positive response from the Government - and that this would get the ball rolling so that the development would become a reality.
Exeter University, having scaled down the size of the development because of the Millennium Commission's refusal of financial support, is now waiting for a decision from Europe over a bid for a £10 million grant.
